James Ainsworth is the chief engineer on the Advanced Tactical Assault Fighter project, working at the Obex Research Centre on Xalan, along with Scott Mansun.

Ainsworth gave a presentation on the ATAF to the White Knights, Silver Panthers, and Red Devils, the new test pilots, stuttering his way through the presentation and making mistakes along the way.

He refused to shake Chaz Koonan's hand on Xalan Orbital, intimidated by the rage the big man was in and worried that his fingers might be crushed (as had happened to Scott Mansun).
